Going Peat Free

If you are a frequent visitor to a National Trust property – particularly those which have a small plant centre attached to them – then you might be aware that this fine organisation only sells plants that are grown in peat free compost. No surprise really, as the NT have a strong environmental policy and they are well aware that there are strong environmental reasons to reduce the amount of peat used in growing plants – I won’t get into that now, as that’s probably a subject for another blog post! Like the National Trust us folks at Wonderpost are also concerned about the environment – after all our ‘signature’ product, the Wonderpost soil improver is 100% natural, which makes it a pretty environmentally friendly product!

We think that you are also concerned about the environment so to help you garden in a more environmentally friendly way we have just added a peat free multipurpose potting compost to our range. Manufactured by another local company, Field Compost, this superb quality growing media is available from us in 40 litre bags, and like all our products, comes with free delivery* to selected areas.

So, what do you use the multipurpose compost for? Well, it’s suitable for re potting plants and for planting up containers, troughs, baskets etc. To make it go further, especially if you are planting up shrubs and trees into a pot I like to mix multipurpose compost with Wonderpost soil improver – something like 70% multipurpose compost and 30% soil improver is an ideal mix. This will not only make the compost go further but will help retain moisture.

Happy potting!
